Hallelujah! Clouds!! I am up at 6:00 and to breakfast at 6:30. At 7:00, Timoth, my guide (no "y"), arrives to take me for a walk. We are going to the lake early to avoid the heat. Still, I am sweating and so the flies are on me (but not Timoth). I am very glad to see Cryspian and the truck when we are picked up because my feet are filthy, bloody from rubbing on my flip flops and the flies smell blood. A cool shower is heaven.
Still, walking with Timoth gave me wonderful access to the company of a Masai man.
At 10:30, the clouds cleared and so I am not leaving my porch until lunch and then later (maybe) for a walk to the nearby waterfall. With open sores on my feet, and with my immune system compromises, I am wary of infection. It is already 31 degrees and rising fast. In 10 days, I leave, and it is hard to imagine that soon I will be in winter (that begins tomorrow) while I am in this crippling heat.
There is a bird flying around here that looks like a small kingfisher, but it is not a water bird. It is brilliant metallic blue on its wings and back and has a beautiful white chest. It's underwings are dark with a white circle and it's long bear and feet and shocking brilliant orange. (Asked Cryspian: woodland kingfisher.)
All the springs and the lake are alkaline. It is weird to see the bright clear water coming out of the ground and it being salty like the sea.
At 3:00 pm, Timoth and I went with Cryspian to an access point to a trail to a waterfall. We were going at the same pace as a delightful couple from New Zealand, their two kids and their guide. When we got there, the New Zealanders all started taking off their shoes and headed to under the falls. Although Timoth wasn't coming with me, lasted two seconds in the heat and was off for a shower. The river is black with volcanic ash, but super warm.
Timoth is a total delight. Aziz was a complete drag.
Check out the 1200 K calves flexing! Bwana ain't dead yet!
