Sunday: trip to Agadir

First a wet last walk through the medina to get my bus and my first experience with street food. Mmmmm. But today is a travel day, and travel days seem to demand a lot of energy. Sadly it was not the sunny day that emerged. There were lots of downpours today in Essaoira and on the road to Agadir. The bus was to leave at 2:00, but an incomprehensible argument amongst passengers and then one passenger in particular and the driver, made us quite late. I had a German dentist as my seat mate—that's three German seat mates so far.

I had a window seat for what I expected would be a drive along the coast, but our route was up through the Atlas mountains then down to the coast at the end. It was a three hours trip and it went by quickly as the foreignness of the landscape gives one endless stimulation. (Check out the water in the photo below.)

Now I am in a "daddy" hotel. You know how there were daddy cars—big American cars—at least that's a term that was popular in my youth. Well I am at a daddy hotel; it is pretentious and overpriced, BUT there is a bath tub and lots of quick hot water. I liked that very much, and I have a balcony. How to make a daddy hotel seem worse? Eat in the hotel. But I lack enough adventurous spirit to go out in a city where, as usual, I have no map or sense of where I am. So a nice hot bath, some chilling' dude (this is a SERIOUS surfer area) a daddy dinner (that was actually OK), and some reading and writing in advance of my only day here in Agadir tomorrow.

Tuesday, I have a bus ticket from here to Marakesh. I really like the busses because you see the people and the land (which today included a guy who was selling arcana oil on the sided of the road and who was exposing his rather impressive self to all passers by). But the waves and the mist and the coastline here are terribly impressive. You see such a contrast of dune and seriously major pounding surf.

Agadir has a population of some 200,000 people and the port looks busy. The greater Agadir area hosts 600,000 people. If it rains tomorrow, I will be really disappointed. Hope and pray that it is a decent day so that I can go exploring to the souk, the fort and along the beach. Going from Essaouira to Agadir, then Marakesh and then Cairo—from village to turbulent mega city in just over a week.
